How safe is my data?

Your data is always encrypted with 256 bit Blowfish format when it is saved or transmitted. Without your password, no one can access the data, not even us. Your password is not stored anywhere inside the mSecure app or database.

In the iOS and Android versions, you can set the Self-Destruct feature to destroy the data after a set number of attempted password tries. This way, if your phone is lost or stolen, anyone who may try to gain access to your data will not be able to so by entering random passwords to login to your mSecure app.

Selecting a strong password is important as well. Mixing upper and lower case letters with numbers and special characters is recommended. Another method is to take an easy-to-remember word, replacing letters with look-a-like numbers and symbols, i.e., Edward -> 3dw@rd

How do I print my records?

The mSecure desktop application (https://msevensoftware.com/product-downloads) will enable you to sync your data to the desktop from your iPhone, then you can print out any number of your records. You can also use mBackup to backup your data in the mobile versions of mSecure. From mBackup, you can export any of your backups stored in that application to a CSV file (you can also export your data to a CSV file in mSecure). After you have your data in the CSV format, you can open it in an application like Excel / Numbers or WordPad / TextEdit and print out a hard-copy of your records.

How often should I backup my data?

Here are some best practices for when to backup:

  • After you make significant changes to your data.
  • BEFORE you change your password. If you forget your new password or mistype it twice, you will be glad you have this backup.
  • BEFORE you make any changes to the way you sync your devices; i.e., syncing with a new device or new desktop for the first time.

See our Backup best practices newsletter article - https://msevensoftware.com/backup_best_practices.

I have forgotten my password, can you reset my password so I can access my data?

For security purposes, we have no “backdoors” to your data, and we are not able retrieve your data since it's encrypted with your password. Also, mSeven Software does not acquire any of our customer's mSecure data, so there is no way for us to send it to you. Even if we were to open your database file, the data contained inside would be encrypted or scrambled, and there would be no way to understand it. The only way to gain access to your records is by using your password to login to your mSecure app.

Very often users will change the password and then forget that they had done so. They'll then be focused on the older password and forget about the newer password. If you know you have changed your password recently, be sure to try the password you were using previously.

If your data has been destroyed by the Self-Destruct feature, and you have a backup (via email backup, mBackup, mSecure for desktop or iTunes), then see restoring from a backup in the platform sections below. See the iOS section for other password helps and data recovery methods when you have forgotten your password.

iOS - iPhone/iPad/iPod touch

I already have the iPhone version of mSecure, and I would like to also use it on my iPod/iPad. Do I have to buy it again?

No, you should NOT have to buy it again. mSecure is an iOS “Universal" app. This means that the same app will run in native mode on iPhone, iPhone 4, iPad and iPod touch in the appropriate native resolution. As long as you are using the same Apple ID on all of your iOS devices, you will be able to download mSecure onto each of them at no additional cost.

I forgot my password, and while entering it, my data was destroyed. I saw a message that I should contact support. Can you help me get my data back?

First, DO NOT sync with iTunes until you have read this FAQ entry.

The reason we ask you to contact us first is so we can help restore the data in the case where you inadvertently mis-typed the password, or you think you now might remember it and want another chance. If you didn't have much data entered into mSecure, or you don't think you can remember the password anyway, the app is now in a blank state, and you can start entering your records again. In this case, you don't need to go through the following steps.

First, a little background on the iTunes backup and restore process. iTunes makes a complete backup of your device at the end of each sync, but it only keeps the last backup created. Therefore, if you do a sync at this point, it will overwrite the backup with the now data-less version of mSecure. If you think you might remember the password, we want to give you an opportunity to restore the data to have another go at it.

If this is the case, go into iTunes Preferences and click on the Device tab. In this view it will list each device that you've synced with and the date and time of the last backup. If there's a backup in there that looks reasonable (fairly recent but before the data loss), check the "Disable automatic synching of iPods, iPhones and iPads" so that iTunes doesn't sync when you connect the device. (Don't forget to uncheck that once you're done with this process.)

Once that's done, you can connect the device and right-click on it in the main iTunes window. Then choose "Restore from backup" and pick the appropriate backup. This will bring your device back to the state it was in at the time of the last backup.

Of course, if you've used any of our backup features (mBackup, email backup or using the full desktop version of mSecure), you can just restore the data from the latest backup. This would be much easier than the above process.

I have not changed my password, but when I enter it, mSecure will not let me in. Can you help me?

Unfortunately, we cannot get your data back since it's encrypted / scrambled with your password. The data is meaningless without the password needed to decrypt / unscramble it. Very often users will change the password and then forget that they had done so. They'll then be focused on the older password, and forget about the newer password.

However if you're sure you haven't changed it, and that you are entering in the correct password, I do want to mention an issue that sometimes happens with the password. On occasion, after an iTunes restore (or iOS update), the iTunes restore process will damage the app, and the symptom of this is that the password stops being recognized. In this case, it's the app that was damaged during the restore and not the data. If you're sure you're entering the correct password, and you have recently performed an iOS update or an iTunes restore, we can see if mSecure has been damaged by loading mSecure over the top of itself. This is different than uninstalling and reinstalling as this would delete the data. So please make sure to follow these steps carefully. If you have any questions while going through these steps, please stop and contact our support staff (support@msevensoftware.com).

We will start this process on the computer that you sync your device with. Go ahead and open iTunes WITHOUT your iOS device connected, then look on the left hand side of iTunes. Near the top of the list will be an option to see the Apps you have purchased in iTunes. Click on this, and find mSecure. Now delete the mSecure app. To clarify, we are deleting the mSecure app icon in iTunes on your computer, not the one on your mobile device. Once this is deleted, go to the iTunes store, and search for the mSecure app. When you find it, you need to click on the Download button to download a fresh copy of mSecure. Once it has finished downloading, please connect your iOS device to your computer, and let it do a normal iTunes sync.

What we have done here is downloaded a fresh copy of mSecure into iTunes on your computer. When you sync your phone, it is going to overwrite the app files of mSecure with the freshly downloaded copy while leaving your data files in place. This will ensure that any possible damage to the app files will be fixed after replacing them druing the sync. Once the regular iTunes sync is done, please try to open mSecure.

If you've abandon all hope of remembering the password, you can "start from scratch" by simply deleting the app and reinstalling the mSecure app. To delete it, tap and hold the mSecure icon in the iPhone's main view until all the icons start to shake. Then tap the little X button to delete it (NOTE: this will delete all your data). To reinstall, you can open the App Store app on your iOS device, then find mSecure in your list of purchased apps. Tap on the cloud icon to download it to your device.

I sync’ed with iTunes and now when I open up mSecure, my data is gone. I don’t have a backup, can you help me get my data back?

First, DO NOT connect your device with iTunes until you have read this FAQ entry.

In some rare occasions, iTunes doesn't properly restore the device. The way the iOS update process works is that iTunes makes a backup of the device. It then flashes the device with the new update. This process completely restores the device back to a factory state (i.e., no user data). It then uses the backup to restore the data.

Unfortunately, for some reason the iTunes restore process doesn't always work and can lead to loss in data. However, it's possible that manually restoring the phone from the backup might restore the data. One issue is that iTunes makes a backup at the end of each sync and may overwrite the existing backup, so please do not connect your device to your computer until you read through this FAQ entry.

You should go into iTunes Preferences and click on the Devices tab. In this view, it will list each device that you've synched with and the date and time of the last backup. If you see a backup in there that looks reasonable, you should check the "Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from synching automatically" so that it doesn't sync when you connect it, thus overwriting the backup. (The wording for this checkbox is a bit different depending on which version of iTunes you're using.)

Once that is done, you can connect the device. When it shows up in the iTunes main window, right click on it, and choose "Restore from backup". This will bring your device back to the state it was in at the time of the last backup.

We strongly recommend you use the Email Backup feature in the preferences of mSecure or mBackup on your computer to maintain backups of your data. See our backup best practices article for more details on backing up your data - https://msevensoftware.com/backup_best_practices.

I already have mSecure for iPhone, and I downloaded mSecure on my iPad for free because mSecure is an iOS “Universal" app. When I open mSecure on the iPad, I don’t see my data. How do I get my data on the iPad?

Your mSecure data is not stored in any type of cloud service by default, so your records will not be transferred to your other iOS devices automatically. If you just need to do a one time transfer of your data, you can use our Email Backup feature in the preferences of mSecure to backup the data from the iPhone, then restore it to mSecure on your iPad. This is an excellent way of getting the iPad version populated with all of the data from the iPhone app.

If you are looking for a solution where you can modify the data on either platform, keeping both of them up to date at all times, you have the option of using either the Dropbox or iCloud sync feature. These two sync features do not require the desktop version of mSecure. You can also use the Wi-Fi sync feature, but this would require the use of the desktop version of mSecure as there is no way to sync two iOS versions of mSecure directly via Wi-Fi. If you are interested in trying either the Mac or Windows verison of mSecure, you can download a 30-day trial of the desktop app from our website at https://msevensoftware.com/product-downloads.

Note: The desktop version of mSecure requires a Wi-Fi connection in order to the sync your records.

I already bought mSecure for iOS, and I would like to re-install it without buying it again. How do I do this?

You can reinstall the mSecure app on the iPhone by simply deleting the app and reinstalling. To delete the app, tap and hold the mSecure icon in the iPhone's main view until all the icons start to shake. Then tap the little X button to delete it (NOTE: this will delete all your data). To reinstall, you can open the App Store app on your iOS device, then find mSecure in your list of purchased apps. Tap on the cloud icon to download it to your device.

I just got a new device, and when I installed mSecure on my new device, my data was not there. How do I get my data on my new device?

The best way to transfer the data is to use our Email Backup / Restore feature in the preferences of mSecure. To do this, you can follow these steps:

  1. Open mSecure on your old iOS device
  2. Tap on the "i" in the bottom right of your screen
  3. Scroll down and tap on Email Backup
  4. Enter your email address and tap on Send in the top right

This creates an email with a file attached to it ending in .mscx, and this email is sent to whichever email you choose. To restore from that email backup, you can follow these steps:

  1. Open mSecure on your new iOS device, and make sure the login password matches the login password you are using in mSecure on your old iOS device
  2. Open Mail, and find the email with your backup file attached
  3. Tap on the attachment, and mSecure will be opened
  4. Enter you password
  5. Tap on the red Restore button when prompted

After you have completed these steps, you should see all of your mSecure data on your device. Consider keeping your data in sync between your device and your desktop using mSecure for Mac or Windows.

Android

I already bought the iPhone version, and I want to move to the Android platform. Do I have to buy the Android version again?

Yes, you will need to purchase the Android version as we have no way of transferring purchases and licensing information between the various app stores.

I forgot my password on my Android device. Can you help me recover my data?

If this is not the case, and you've abandon all hope of remembering the password, you can "start from scratch" by simply reinstalling mSecure. Remember, you data will be deleted when mSecure is unintalled. To uninstall the app, go to Android's Settings > Applications > Manage applications, find mSecure, tap on it, then tap on the "Uninstall" button. To reinstall, return to the App Store app from where you purchased mSecure, and download it again. You will not have to pay for it again as long as you are logged into the App Store with the same account your used when you purchased mSecure.

Once re-installed, you can restore your data if you have a backup of your data on the Internal SD Card, in your Gmail account, or you can restore via Wi-Fi if you have your data on your desktop running mBackup or mSecure.

I just bought the Android product on the Google Play Store, and it won't install. Can you help me?

Typically, there are two reasons for this;

  1. Your Credit Card was declined during the purchase, and the Google Merchant system has sent you an email telling you why the card was declined. Please check your email for further instructions, or contact us and we will look into the matter.
  2. Your phone is having problems installing the app on your SD card (this is the default option on most newer phones).

To force an install on to the regular phone memory, please do the following:

  1. Go to your Settings menu from your Android home page, select the "SD Card and phone storage" item, then tap on "Unmount SD card."
  2. Now go to the Google Play Store, and buy the mSecure app again. Since you already purchased it, the Play Store will recognize this and not charge you again.
  3. Once the install is complete, remount the SD card from the same Settings menu and launch mSecure.

How do I re-install my mSecure app on my Android device (without loosing my data)?

First you should backup your records, because your data will be lost when mSecure is uninstalled. To make a backup to your internal SD card, you can follow these steps:

  1. Open mSecure and tap on the settings icon in the bottom right of the main view to go to mSecure's preferences
  2. Tap on Backup > Internal SD Card

This will make a backup of your data that you can restore from after reinstalling mSecure.

After you have reinstalled, you can follow these steps to restore your data:

  1. Open mSecure and tap on the tools icon in the bottom right of the main view to go to mSecure's preferences
  2. Make sure the password matches the password you were using before you reinstalled mSecure
  3. Tap on Restore > Internal SD Card
  4. Find the backup you just made, and tap on it to restore from it
After the restore process has finished, you should see your records when you go back to the main view of mSecure.

My Android phone crashed during operation. What can I send you to help debugging the app?

Please email the "exceptions.txt" file in the "mSecure" folder on the SD Card. There is no personal info in this file. It will help figure out what caused the problem. If you have the "ES File Explorer" app installed on your device, you will be able attach the file to an email you can send to our support staff at support@msevensoftware.com.

To further assist us in sync debugging, you can make sure the "Enable Logging" option is checked in mSecure's preferences. With this option truned on, mSecure write debugging info to the log.txt file in your internal SD card's "mSecure" folder. Again, we do not record any personal info in this file. After retrying the sync operation to make sure the error you are experiencing is recorded, please email that file to us as well.

I was expecting a serial number for your desktop program as part of my purchase. Where can I get my desktop product?

We're currently offering our desktop backup utility, mBackup for free. mBackup allows you to backup and restore your mobile mSecure data to and from your computer. It also will allow you to import/export the data to/from various text file formats. You can download mBackup at www.msevensoftware.com/mbackup.

In addition, we offer full desktop versions of mSecure for both the Mac and Windows platforms. The desktop app will allow you to view/edit/delete the data on your desktop as well as synciong with the iOS and Android versions of mSecure via the Wi-Fi, Dropboox or iCloud sync features. You can download a 30 day trial from our site at www.msevensoftware.com.

The iCloud sync feature is only available for Apple devices, and you must purchase the Mac version of the application through the Mac App Store to use iCloud syncing on your computer.

I have a Windows version of mSecure and I have moved to the Macintosh. My Windows serial number does not work on the Mac Version of mSecure. Can you help me with this?

The serial number you currently have is for the Windows version and will not work on the Mac version (and vice-versa). If you have no plans to continue using your current version and you purchased it in the last 180 days, then we can refund your purchase and you can buy the other version. Otherwise, you can buy the other version from our web site.

Note: If you were wanting to use iCloud syncing in mSecure on your Mac to keep your Apple devices in sync, then you would need to purchase the Mac App Store version. Due to Apple's policies, only apps sold in the Mac App Store can utilize iCloud syncing.

I have a computer at work, that I would like to install mSecure on, can I do this?

Technically, the license is for each machine, but we have no problem with you installing it on another computer if you are the only user and the platform (Mac/PC) is the same (because windows serial numbers do not work on Macs and vise-versa). You can email support if you run out of activations during your install (support@msevensoftware.com).

Can I sync more than one device (iOS, Android) to mSecure desktop?

Yes, you can sync multiple devices (iOS and Android) to mSecure desktop (Mac and Windows), and all devices and desktops will have the same data. Only mSecure for iOS and Android OS can initiate a Wi-Fi sync at this time, so you would use these devices to cause the desktops to sync. For example if you make a change on one device and your desktop to the same record, the most recent change will become the master record when synced on all devices and desktops.

When adding a new device to the sync chain, I always recommend backing up a master copy of your data. We recommend using the Email backup feature on the iPhone or Backup to Internal SD on the Android. Each of these features can be found in mSecure's preferences.

I would like to reset my desktop database, how do I do this?

Windows - To reset the mSecure Desktop database, go to your Documents->mSecure folder. Find the "mSecure.mscw" file and rename the file adding ".old" to the end of the file name. Now restart the mSecure program and it will create a fresh database. After setting up the new database, you can go ahead and delete the "mSecure.mscw.old" file in your Document's mSecure folder.

Mac - To get to the database file can be tricky depending on your version of OS X. These steps will work no matter your version:

  1. Make sure mSecure is closed
  2. Open a new Finder window
  3. Next, go up to the top of the screen and click on the GO menu bar item
  4. Look for the Library folder in the list. If you don't see the Library item in the list, then press and hold down the option(ALT) key on your keyboard and the "Library" folder should show up.
  5. Click on the "Library" item in the list to open the Finder window to your user account's Library folder
    • It is important to follow these steps exactly to make sure you open the correct Library folder as there is more than one
  6. Next, locate and open the Application Support folder
  7. Inside the Application Support folder, locate and open the mSecure folder
  8. Inside the mSecure folder is your mSecure.mscm database file. Go ahead and move that file to another location or just change the name of the file.

Now restart mSecure, and a fresh database will be created. After setting up the new database, you can go ahead and delete the original "mSecure.mscw" file.

Can I maintain multiple data sets in mSecure desktop, one for me and one for family member?

You can maintain multiple databases on your Mac or PC and then sync one of those databases to a device. A device (iPhone, iPad, iPod, Android) can only have one database at a time on it.

To maintain multiple databases on your PC...
- Go to your mSecure folder in your Documents folder and change the name of the "mSecure.mscw" to something like "PersonalPasswords.mscw."

- Then launch mSecure again and a new database will be created as "mSecure.mscw." Change this new database file name to a name that makes sense for the data contained that database.
Now when you want to sync or edit one of the databases, just go to the mSecure folder and double-click on the database and it will launch in mSecure for editing and syncing. You might consider a shortcut on your desktop to launch either database.

To maintain multiple databases on your Mac...
- Go to your mSecure folder in your Library's Appliction Support folder and change the name of the "mSecure.mscm" to something like "personal.mscm." Finding the mSecure folder can be tricky depending on the version of OS X you are running on your computer. You can follow the next set of steps to change the name of the database file:

  8. Inside the mSecure folder is your mSecure.mscm database file
  9. Rename that file to something more appropriate to it's usage, such as "personal.mscm"
  10. Leave this folder open for now

- Now, launch mSecure again, and a new database will be created as "mSecure.mscm" in the mSecure folder you left open at the end of the previous set of steps. Change this new database file name to a name that makes sense for the data contained that database. Now when you want to sync or edit one of the databases, just go to the mSecure folder and double-click on the database and it will launch in mSecure for editing and syncing. At this point, you have two mSecure database, and you can double-click on either of these files to open them in mSecure. You can even drag them to the right side of your dock, to the left of the trash can, if you would like to them more readily available. This way, you will be able to open each database with a single-click when needed. Another option would be to create a shortcut to each database on your desktop for easier access.

I am moving to a new desktop computer, how to do move my mSecure desktop data?

After mSecure is installed (see above FAQ), you can move your data by copying your database file from your old computer to the new computer.

mSecure for Mac: The data is stored in a file called mSecure.mscm, and this file can be a little bit tricky to find depending on your version of OS X. The following steps will work no matter which version your are running:

  1. Make sure mSecure is closed
  2. Open a new Finder window
  3. Next, go up to the top of the screen and click on the GO menu bar item
  4. Look for the Library folder in the list. If you don’t see the Library item in the list, then press and hold down the option(ALT) key on your keyboard and the “Library” folder should show up.
  5. Click on the “Library” item in the list to open the Finder window to your user account’s Library folder
    • It is important to follow these steps exactly to make sure you open the correct Library folder as there is more than one
  6. Next please locate and open the Application Support folder
  7. Inside the Application Support folder, please locate and open the mSecure folder
  8. Inside the mSecure folder is your mSecure.mscm database file

Once you access to that file, you can copy it, and place it in the same folder on the new computer.

mSecure for Windows: The data is stored in a file called mSecure.mscw, and this file is located in your Documents->mSecure folder. Just copy it to the new computer and place it in the same folder.

mBackup for Mac: The data is stored in a file called mBackup.db and this file is located in your Documents folder. Just copy it to the new computer, and place it in the same folder.

mBackup for Windows: The data is stored in a file called mBackup.db and this file is located in your Documents->mBackup folder. Just copy it to the new computer and place it in the same folder.

Syncing/Backup

I am on an a mobile device, and I am having problems syncing. What can I do to fix this?

See this video if you are not sure how to setup the connection on an Android: http://www.screencast.com/t/tohuMsQu

A couple of sync tips:
- You must have the latest version of mSecure installed on your desktop.
- You must be logged into mSecure on your desktop in order for the sync to take place.
- Make sure the preferences panel is closed on the desktop program when testing the connection.

The number one reason for the mobile version of mSecure not being able to find or communicate with the desktop version is a Firewall blocking incoming network connections. You will need to make sure that mSecure is added to the list of exceptions in the firewall settings. This way, the communication between your mSecure apps will not be blocked. If you are running any anti-virus software, you will need to check the firewall settings in that program as well to make sure mSecure is added to its exceptions list. Be sure to reboot your computer after making any changes to either the Windows / Mac or anti-virus firewalls.

One other thing we have seen in the Windows Firewall is mSecure can be listed multiple times in the firewall exceptions list, which causes Windows to block mSecure's communications entirely. We're not sure how or why this happens, but if you see more than one listing for mSecure in the firewall exceptions, make sure it is closed, then remove all of the exceptions from the list, and reopen mSecure. Windows should detect that mSecure needs to be added into the firewall exceptions automatically.

After making any changes, please reboot your computer and your mobile device, open mSecure and login, then try to run the sync again from your mobile device.

The sync button in the desktop verison is not active. How do I sync my records?

The sync button in the desktop version of mSecure will be disabled unless the Dropbox sync feature is set up. A Wi-Fi sync can only be initiated from the mobile version of mSecure when syncing with the desktop version of the app.

When setting up one of the cloud sync features, I had to enter a "sync password" to finish the set up process. Is this a different password than the one I use to login to mSecure?

Yes, the "sync password" or "cloud sync password" is a different password than what you use to login to mSecure. There are two different passwords used for encrypting your data when syncing via Dropbox or iCloud. There is the login password that you use to unlock mSecure, and this password is used to encrypt / decrypt your data stored locally on your device. There is also a cloud sync password that is used to encrypt / decrypt the data in your sync file which is stored in your cloud account. Each device that is syncing with that file must have the same cloud sync password set in order to be authorized to perform a sync with that file.

The reason there is a cloud sync password as well as the login password is because some of our customers wish to have a very strong password protecting their data stored in their cloud account. They want to be able to set a very long and random password to encrypt their sync file in their cloud account, which would be nearly impossible for them to remember and enter into mSecure every time they login to the app. This way, they can have a strong, but more memorable, password to login to mSecure multiple times a day, and they can also have an extremely strong password protecting their sync file in their cloud account.

Import/Export

I have data in another password manager, and I would like to move it to mSecure. How do I do this?

Most programs will export the data to a "CSV" file. The first thing to check is if it does export to CSV.

CSV is a very simple file format that simply means the data in the file is separated by commas. It actually stands for "Comma Separated Values." The problem with a CSV is that it doesn't specify what the data is or what order the data is in. Therefore, even though we import from a CSV, it is very likely you'll need to modify the file a bit.

CSV files are very easily modifiable in a spreadsheet. Any spreadsheet app will import the CSV file, and put each field into it's own column in the spreadsheet. You can then delete/add/move the columns around into the order that mSecure needs.

mSecure expects the first column to be the group the record is associated with. The second column is the type of data for the record (for example, Web Logins, Credit Cards, etc.). The third column is the description of the record. The fourth column is the note. The next N columns are the field data. It's N number of fields becasue mSecure can have any number of fields you would like in your records.

We have much more detailed documentation on how to create the CSV in our mBackup user's guide here: mBackup User's Guide

This might seem overwhelming at first but really isn't so difficult once you get the hang of it. Of course, if you have any questions, please contact support (support@msevensoftware.com).
